Delta Kappa Gamma Society has recognized Louise Dawson of J.J. Cardinal's as a Friend of Education
Mu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International is honored to present the Friend of Education Award to Louise Dawson, owner of J.J. Cardinal's Wild Bird & Nature Store of Grand Blanc.
In indulging her passion for nature, Louise has opened the door to the natural world for many others...she has generously donated goods and materials. The Grand Blanc community and schools have taken notice of her efforts and recognized her accordingly (see above). Not only does Louise hold classes for nature crafts and learning, she also goes to classrooms, senior centers, leads nature hikes and mentors young people thus creating a new generation of citizens sensitive to environmental concerns, filled with love of nature.
NICHE Magazine has recognized J.J. Cardinal's once again in their 2007 Top Retailer Awards. Independent artists have nominated J.J. Cardinal's Notebook (available in print and online) for having the Best Customer Newsletter.
NICHE Magazine is national publication with a focus on fine American crafts. Publisher Wendy Rosen was delighted to recognize J.J. Cardinal's, a multi-year nominee for it's excellence and focus in presenting new and creative American crafts and works of art. "The American crafts and artistic community help keep our merchandise selection fresh and unique," says owner Louise Dawson.
J.J. Cardinal's Wild Bird & Nature Store has been recognized by NICHE Magazine for their 2006 Top Retailer Awards. Nominated earlier this year for several awards, J.J. Cardinal's was recently selected as a finalist for "Top Retailer" as well as "Best Merchandising", "Best Customer Newsletter" and "Best Local Community Outreach" categories.
NICHE magazine, the exclusive trade publication for retailers of fine American craft, will announce the winners at a ceremony in July during the Philadelphia Buyers Market of American Craft. "I am honored to recognize this year's nominees," noted Wendy Rosen, publisher of NICHE magazine. "J.J. Cardinal's commitment to the American craft movement ensures the strength and growth of the arts and small businesses in communities throughout the country."
J.J. Cardinal's was also nominated in 2003. "We're thrilled and delighted with this honor again this year," says Louise Dawson, J.J. Cardinal's founder and owner. "We have made a point to expand our collection of American crafted goods and consciously have reduced the amount of imported items in our store; there's more than enough of that available in the marketplace. Our customers have responded to the delightful and creative work by a host of crafts people who's goods and work are now proudly displayed at J.J. Cardinal's."

J.J. Cardinal's was nominated for the Hometown Hero Award sponsored by the Grand Blanc Chamber of Commerce. The award is part of the Chairman's Award Dinner celebration hosted at Warwick Hills Country Club. The event highlights the contributions of 25 people and organizations "who have given much of their time, effort, and heart to be an advocate for many in the Grand Blanc and surrounding areas". In addition to the Hometown Hero, individual Awards are presented to: Citizen of the Year, Athena, Children's Hero Award, Educator of the Year, and Health Professional Hero.

A Nickname Is Born: "Bird Lady of Grand Blanc"
A Flint Journal article in July of 1993 made it official: Louise is "The Bird Lady of Grand Blanc." Prior to that publication, friends and customers jokingly referred to her as such. The newspaper article ensured the title would stick. Today, children in the grocery store or local restaurants loudly exclaim: "Look! There's the Bird Lady!"
The complete article, along with a virtual time capsule of printed news accounts appear at "J.J. Cardinal In The News".
