Bats are among the some of the most interesting and important beneficial mammals. Of all mammals, bats make up 25% of the population!

Some fascinating bats facts:

  • Bats are the only mammals capable of actual flight.

  • A bat’s wing is much like the human hand: it has four fingers, and a thumb.

  • Bats locate food with sound waves.

  • Bats are not blind. Most bats live up to 35 years.

  • The largest colony of bats, over 20-million, is found in central Texas.

  • Most North American bats hibernate in the winter. Bat babies (pups), can weigh up to 25% of the mother’s weight. Ok, Moms, can you imagine giving birth to a baby that size?

Bat Haven from HeartwoodBat Haven by Heartwood - Handsome moss green bat lodge features double nesting cavities with climbing mesh for easy access and hanging for your bat colony. Room for roughly 48 bats in this completely waterproof and mighty cozy abode; metal bat applique gives a cheery welcome. Made from select cypress with exterior CDX backing. Hanging hook attached to back. No assembly required. Dimensions: 5" x 14" x 22".  $104.

More fascinating bats facts:
  • An abandoned copper mine in upper Michigan, Millie Hill Mine, is home to over 1-million bats.
  • There are seven species of bats that call Michigan home: big brown, evening, hoary, Indiana, little brown, red, and silver-haired bat.
  • The big brown bat is the most abundant, and the most common bat found in bat houses.
  • Because the bats natural habitat is disappearing so quickly, we suggest placing human-made bat houses. For our efforts, bats rewarded us with their natural bug-zapping ability. Bats eat thousands of insects during nightly feeding. Not only do they eat tons of insects every night, some bats pollinate, and disperse seeds.
  • Bats are nocturnal and do not disturb birds; you may place bat houses near birdfeeders.
  • Bats and birds coexist very well because they forage for food at different times. In Michigan, bats leave bat houses in winter, and migrate, but once a colony is established, bats return (typically in early March) to the same bat house year-after-year.

so who is this guy, J.J. Cardinal? click here to find out...J.J.'s NestingTips - "Dryer lint is not recommended as nesting material, it holds moisture and may create an unhealthy condition in the nest. If you do wish to collect materials suitable for nesting we recommend: animal and human hair, short lengths (3-inch or less) of string, yarn, dental floss and thread, shredded paper, strips of wood, cotton batting, feathers, and sisal (a wood product). We also recommend you refrain from offering nesting materials in the thin plastic mesh bags often used for packaging some brands and also is found in the produce section at grocery stores. Plastic mesh has been known to entangle birds and other wildlife. Use a wire container designed for nesting material - suet baskets work well, too!
