Are you ready to grow some big sunflowers?

"Pikes Peak" is this year's sunflower seed varietyStarting in March, we will start dispensing packets of sunflower seeds to those who wish to participate in our annual sunflower-growing contest. This year's sunflower variety is called Pike's Peak.

Pike's Peak is a perfect name because this is the sunflower that all other sunflowers look up to; it has the largest sunflower seeds in the world.  Ginormous seed heads house seeds as large as 1½" long - they will be the biggest you have ever laid your eyes on!  The seeds need to be planted 26" to 30" apart in full sun and will they grow to a height of 12 to 15 feet with luminous 14" diameter heads!

This contest is a great way to get you out into the garden. It is also a wonderful activity for kids, too, because they will learn about soils, potting mediums, sun positioning, watering requirements, and, of course, all about friendly competition.

If you would like to participate in the contest, you may pick up a free packet of seeds and all the contest rules after March 1. Sunflower growing contest rules:

1) You must use the seeds we give you.
2) You can use whatever soil, fertilizer, growing medium you want.
3) No one is allowed to tamper with any one else's plants, seeds, etc.
4) Limit one entry per category (see below: plant height, or flower head diameter).

The contest ends on Saturday September 28, 2013. Participants can bring in their plant for measurement, or if you cannot bring yourself to pull it out of the ground (we understand), just call us with the measurements. We will have two winners: the largest diameter sunflower head, and the tallest plant. The winners will be featured in our J.J. Cardinal's Calendar and on our website, plus, you will win bragging rights for a year and a 40-pound bag of...you guessed it, sunflower seeds!
