Sunflower Growing Contest Winners

We're thrilled to announce the 2 winners from our Sunflower Growing Contest!

Tallest Plant: Josh from Grand Blanc won the "tallest plant" category for nurturing his plant all spring and summer to grow 12' 5" tall. This was Josh's first sunflower contest, and he grew a giant!  Josh was so worried that his little plants would be eaten as they started to pop through the ground, his father Brian installed rabbit fencing above and below the ground so the critters couldn't get to them. Brian said, "the fencing helped support the plants as they grew," and that "Josh watered his plants faithfully and checked on them every day, and exclaimed at how fast they were growing."

Brian said that he and Josh saw neighbors drive by slowly, smile and gawk in amazement at the size of their plants. They had to plant the sunflowers in their front yard because Josh noticed the directions called for the seeds to be planted in full sun. I could tell that Brian enjoyed the activity as much as Josh did, and said they would definitely participate again next year.

Largest Sunflower-flower head: Congratulations to Susan P. of Holly for winning our sunflower contest with the largest diameter sunflower. With petals included Susan's sunflower was 18 inches in diameter!  Susan brought her gigantic sunflower to the store Saturday with her daughter Emily. After Susan and Emily wrestled the plant out of their car, we measured it for overall length and flower head diameter. Susan said, "I am so amazed at the size of the plants. I didn't plant the seeds until June 10!"

Josh and his really tall sunflower plant

Some of the participants started growing their plants indoors in small pots, and true to the directions, and the size of the plants submitted today, we saw it was not necessary. Susan was simply giddy with her plants results and she should be.

Josh and Susan won bragging rights for their sunflower growing skills for the next year and a 40 pound bag of ... you guessed it ... sunflower seeds.
