monarch about to be 'released'

It's a citheronia regalis caterpillar (fourth instar) as big as a cigar!

they raised it, nurtured it, worried about it, and cared for it...now it's time to let their Monarch Butterfly go off to explore this big, amazing world all on it's own.

Louise was excited when a supplier offered something new, and rather unusual. "It is a fourth instar citheronia regalis caterpillar, also known as Hickory Horned Devil," says Louise, owner of J.J. Cardinal's. Though the supply is limited & not for sale you can see this huge caterpillar at J.J.'s! (center photo taken 7/28/03; upper right image captured 8/12/03)
