project in Davisburg (MI) rock polishing: great 'hands-on' project for large groups
Davisburg (MI) - On February 10, J.J. Cardinal Naturalist, Louise Dawson, went to Davisburg Elementary, to conduct a workshop: "Polish A Petoskey Stone”  with one 3rd grade class and three 4th grade classes. Teachers designed the program to complement geology education curriculum. The children hand polished their own Petoskey stone and learned all about the rock: where it is found, how it was formed, who it is named after. The Petoskey stone was named Michigan’s official state stone in 1965.
