Providing
bits of string and twigs is a big help to nesting building birds. At our activity called Birds
Nesting Soup kids learned about Michigans nesting birds, saw actual bird
nests, and made a Birdie Helper or "soup". A soup-size
aluminum can is filled with a variety of materials birds may use in nest construction and
hung from a tree - over time, birds pull bits from the can as they construct nests nearby.
Above left, participants "stir the pot" filled with essential ingredients. [March 2005]
